The Effectiveness of Adolescent-Centered Mindfulness on Co-rumination and Depression in Adolescent Girls with Depressive Symptoms

Abstract

Aim: Adolescence is a critical phase of development that can affect the probability, intensity, and progression of mental health issues. Adolescents experience co-rumination and depressive symptoms, and therapeutic interventions are needed in this regard. The aim of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of adolescent-centered mindfulness on co-rumination and depression in adolescent girls with depressive symptoms.
Method: The research method was a quasi-experimental (pre-test, post-test, and follow-up design) with a control group. The statistical population of this study was adolescent girls with depressive symptoms in Borujerd city. Among them, 26 were randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups. Adolescent-centered mindfulness therapy was implemented for the experimental group in 8 sessions, and the control group did not receive any intervention during the study. Co-rumination and beck depression scales (13-items) were used to collect data. Analysis of variance with repeated measures was used to analyze the data.
Results: The results showed that adolescent-centered mindfulness therapy was effective in reducing co-rumination (effect size=0.19; F=5.67; p<0.03) and depression (effect size=0.42; F=17.57; p<0.001) in adolescent girls with depressive symptoms, and this effectiveness was sustained during the follow-up (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Based on the results, adolescent-centered mindfulness therapy was effective in reducing co-rumination and depression in adolescent girls with depressive symptoms. Therefore, the use of adolescent-centered mindfulness therapy is recommended to alleviate co-rumination and depression in adolescent girls with depressive symptoms.
