Aim: This study aims to systematically review research on the cultural adaptation of psychotherapy and to propose a comprehensive and integrated model for culturally adapted psychotherapy.
Method: The first part of this research involves a systematic review of 12 studies published between 2020 and 2024. These studies were evaluated based on five key questions: the benefits of culturally adapted psychotherapy, models utilized, targeted disorders, therapeutic approaches, and target groups. In the second part, the "Integrated Model of Cultural Adaptation Psychotherapy" is introduced.
Results: The reviewed studies demonstrated that culturally adapted psychotherapy significantly reduces psychological symptoms, enhances treatment adherence, and improves quality of life. Although various frameworks and models for cultural adaptation exist, many studies did not follow a specific model. Drawing on existing models, frameworks, and research evidence, the current study presents the "Integrated Model of Cultural Adaptation in Psychotherapy (IMCAP)," comprising five main phases: identification, cultural adaptation, therapist training, intervention and implementation, and evaluation and iteration.
Conclusion: The Integrated Model of Cultural Adaptation in Psychotherapy (IMCAP) is proposed as a comprehensive framework for designing and implementing culturally adapted interventions. With active participation from target communities and stakeholders, alongside continuous monitoring and feedback, this model offers the flexibility and adaptability needed to address diverse cultural contexts.
