English

Aim: The aim of this study was to develop a strengths-based educational program and examine its effectiveness on parent–child relationships, peer rejection, and symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.
Method: This study was conducted using a sequential exploratory mixed-methods design. In the first phase, a strengths-based educational program was developed through a systematic review of previous studies, semi-structured interviews with 21 mothers of children with ADHD and 18 teachers, and content validity evaluation by experts. In the second phase, the effectiveness of the program was examined through a quasi-experimental study with a pretest–posttest, three-month follow-up, and control group design. Data were collected using the Parent–Child Relationship Questionnaire (Lang et al., 2002), the Peer Rejection Scale (Loewenstein et al., 2013), and the fourth edition of the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham Parent Rating Scale (SNAP-IV; Swanson et al., 2012). Data were analyzed using mixed analysis of variance with repeated measures.
Results: The findings showed that the interaction effect between time and group was significant for parent–child relationships, peer rejection, and ADHD symptoms (P < .001). Moreover, the effects of the intervention remained stable during the three-month follow-up period.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that a strengths-based educational program can shift parents’ perspectives from a deficit-focused approach to a strength-focused approach. This program can be used as a complementary intervention to improve parent–child relationships and reduce peer rejection and ADHD symptoms in children.
