English

Aim: The present study aimed to examine the relationship between the behavioral activation and inhibition systems and food craving, and the mediating role of mindfulness in this relationship among female students.
Method: The research design was descriptive-correlational. The population comprised female students at the University of Tabriz during the 2024–2025 academic year, from whom 288 participants were selected through multistage cluster sampling. The instruments included the Behavioral Inhibition/Activation Systems Scales (Carver & White, 1994), the short form of the Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory (Walach et al., 2006), and the short form of the Food Cravings Questionnaire (Meule et al., 2014). Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling and AMOS.
Results: The behavioral activation system had a positive direct effect, whereas the behavioral inhibition system had a negative direct effect, on food craving. Mindfulness was also negatively and significantly associated with food craving. Bootstrap analysis confirmed the significant mediating role of mindfulness in the relationships of both behavioral activation and behavioral inhibition systems with food craving.
Conclusion: The findings showed that mindfulness, as a mediating variable, explains how behavioral systems are associated with food craving. Higher sensitivity of the behavioral activation system may contribute to increased craving partly through reduced mindfulness, whereas the behavioral inhibition system may have a protective role by facilitating mindfulness. Thus, the findings highlight the importance of considering the interplay between personality characteristics and self-regulatory processes in modeling eating behaviors in this sample.
