Aim: The present study aimed to investigate the structural relationships between attachment styles (secure, anxious, and avoidant) and symptoms of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, with the mediating roles of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and intolerance of uncertainty among students.
Method: This descriptive-correlational study was conducted during the 2024–2025 academic year. The study population consisted of all students at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, and the study sample comprised 430 students recruited using convenience sampling. Instruments included the obsessive-compulsive personality subscale of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III (Millon, 1997), Revised Adult Attachment Scale (Collins & Read, 1996), Ambivalence over Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire (King & Emmons, 1990), and Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (Carleton et al., 2007). Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with SPSS-27 and AMOS-26.
Results: Findings indicated significant direct relationships between secure, anxious, and avoidant attachment styles and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder symptoms, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, and intolerance of uncertainty (P=0.0001). Positive significant relationships were also observed between ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and intolerance of uncertainty with the obsessive-compulsive personality disorder symptoms (P=0.0001). Moreover, all indirect paths from attachment styles to obsessive-compulsive personality disorder symptoms through the two mediators were significant (P=0.0001).
Conclusion: Results emphasize the central role of attachment styles in explaining obsessive-compulsive personality disorder symptoms. Therapeutic interventions aimed at increasing uncertainty tolerance and improving emotional regulation and expression can effectively reduce these symptoms.
